James Noble Ward, born September 1823, Plymoutn, New Hampshire, killed December 6,
1858 New Mexico Territory. Cadet at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, in 1841 and graduated in 1845. He was a brevet lieutenant with the 6th Infantry Regiment at Fort Smith, Arkansas, and later served with the 3rd Infantry Regiment. Ward was commended for his conduct at the Battle of Cerro Gordo and was eventually promoted to captain. Ward conversions are found on U.S. Model 1812 and Model 1816. The number of converted arms is unknown and estimated at 300. Additionally and prior to the contract for 1200 conversations about 100 muskets were altered from flint to percussion at the New York arsenal for trialy.
